Wambach, go sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done
By: Melissa | May 5th, 2009
Daniela suffered two injured knee ligaments and a crack in her tibia from Wambach’s tackle. Daniela is now out “indefinitely” and STL can kiss their most prolific goal scorer goodbye. So the new question is whether Wambach deserves more than a yellow card. This is something WPS is considering. COO Mary Harvey spoke to Goff: “We are carefully reviewing the play, just as we are reviewing other physical plays and yellow cards issued over the weekend. The review must play out properly and thoroughly before any judgments can be made.”
Wambach issued a public apology: “In regards to the injury Daniela sustained during our game, the thing I need to convey most is how hard it is for a player who has sustained a significant injury in the past year to now be on the other side of it. It’s been crucial for me to find out exactly what injuries Daniela has sustained because of how important I know she is to the Saint Louis franchise. I’ve been in contact with a close friend on the team to stay updated. Unfortunately soccer is a physical game and players do get injured. There was no intent on my side to cause any harm. I wish Daniela nothing but the speediest of recoveries. My thoughts and prayers are with her.” Waldo went off on the situation on Fox Fone In (still looking for a link). Solo even chimed in about it on Sunday: “My thought on it was that there was no excuse for it. I know Abby means well, and I know she has a good heart, and that she’d never want to see a player go down. But in the emotions of a game, it was right after the kickoff after they scored, and it was too many emotions, and she went into two-footed.” And it was a physical game, although I’m not entirely sure it was a personal game (but WPS needs a few good stories so I’m rolling with it). So the question now is whether Wambach gets a fine or suspension… or nothing.

Curious, I wouldn’t imagine there’s a video for us to decide for ourselves would there?

I’m curious, how many red cards have been given out this season?

This game was televised, so there should be some good footage.

Hi guys. I posted a link to the highlights of this game a few posts back but can post again. And there’s been at least on red card so far in WPS (a Red Stars player) possibly more (I forget). Wambach only got a yellow for her tackle.

I saw the replay on FFF. It’s not so clear if Abby’s horror-challenge was two-footed, but it looked like at least a yellow-card offense (I don’t know if she even got a card).
Let’s not make light of it. Certainly this is awful for Daniela and it is pretty awful for Abby, too, who will feel it for a while whatever the league’s recourse.
I suspect the League and referees will be meeting & meeting & meeting on this for a while.
Keep in mind that the Abby challenge has a context in which Abby herself was being abusively fouled by St. Louis’ defender Tina Ellertson. From the highlights — which are selective — it looked as though Tina deserved at least two yellows in the first half on fouls against Abby in which Tina was not looking for the ball. Pretty horrendous stuff.
Accordingly, placing myself in Abby Wambach’s boots, I too would have seen the red mist because the referee was clearly missing the plot and not protecting Abby.
She’s a presence and needs to be defended aggressively. But it should be in fairness.
The refs throughout WPS need to be taking this on in all facets.
Let’s wish Daniela a swift return and Abby our thoughtful concern.
