My first press conference

By: Melissa | November 19th, 2008

See that fuzzy face at the podium in the picture to the left? That’s Joe Cannon from my crappy camera phone. Well, it’s not so crappy cause it’s the Google phone and I recently bought it and I’m totally loving it but the camera on the phone… not so much. So The Joe is best friends with newly named FC Gold Pride’s head coach Albertin Montoya (not to be confused with Inigo Montoya – and I simply cannot be the first person to mention that joke ever) and he spent a bit of time at the press conference telling stories about their friendship before he introduced Albertin to us then gave him a big hug which was very sweet yet slightly awkward perhaps because Cannon is something like 3 feet taller than Montoya. And The Joe also pointed out a few times that the daughter of owners Brian and Nancy NeSmith is also an owner making her (and her not-present sister) the youngest owner of a professional sports team (I think, I didn’t research that fact to be honest) which, according to Cannon, probably makes her very popular at school. And the girl, sitting in a chair at the front of the room, surrounded by her parents, the GM, the WPS Commissioner, and the coaching staff, had a sort of frozen look on her face when Cannon addressed her. I, of course, interpreted her expression to mean whatever goalkeeper, I eat b*tches like you for breakfast. Ok, that was probably NOT what was going through her head at the time, but I’d like to think that it was.

And to speculate on a theme for this conference, I say it was truly all about the children… the kids… specifically the girls. In fact, there was a comment from one of the speakers that she hoped the team and the league could influence kids to take down their Miley Cyrus posters and put up Brandi Chastain (who was there and who totally bumped into me and who is shockingly short and shockingly good looking so there’s hope for all of us yet) posters. And people brought their kids to the event and a bunch of kids with painted faces ran up to the front of the room when the owners unveiled the name and logo. There was such huge focus on the darn kids, that I became seriously worried if any of the SJ Ultras really did manage to attend a game or two (last time I checked they were on the fence about it), would they even make it through the first half before getting kicked out of the stadium?

And the name. FC Gold Pride. That’s a mouthful. How did they come up with that? I’ll let the press release explain:

The team name, Pride, was selected by owners Brian and Nancy NeSmith and is derived from the reference to a group of lions. A lioness, prominently featured in the team’s black and gold logo serves as an icon for the team’s qualities of teamwork, strength and skill. Lioness are the providers of the pride and are often seen as the pinnacle of hunting prowess. Each lioness has a specific role within the group and work as a team to serve the greater good of the pride.

And Brian NeSmith explained at the conference that the gold part was for the Golden State so I guess they decided to slap the two together. Maybe the FC adds a slight Euro twist. I dunno but that’s what we got. Hallelujah.

Allison, you are being too nice. So far I’ve heard, “Lame Pride”, “Sounds kinda high school-ish”, and a mutual friend of ours (to remain nameless) confusing that lioness above with a cougar then breaking into a rant about how the stadium will be filled with MILFs and cougars so it’s a nice touch. Bay Area WPS team is off to a great start so far. Let’s BRING IT!

North American soccer is rife with awful team names; glad FCGP is following tradition. Anything beats the “CyberRays” though…

BTW, shouldn’t they be the “Golden” Pride to follow with the Golden State, Golden Gate, etc. It flows a little better.

I’m gonna be a fan regardless, but the Hertz #1 Club Gold color scheme seems like an unfortunate coincidence as well.
