More on Kelly Smith’s move to Boston
By: Melissa | February 8th, 2009Yeah, ok. I have zero insider info but what I do have is a tendency to check-back on conversations over the internet and the previously mentioned debate over at BBC’s website regarding Smith’s move to the US league. Well, a few hours ago when I read the initial comments, I thought they were cute yet silly yet kind of ignorant:
loudLovelyrita doesn’t want Smith to encounter the same fate as David Beckham
Justiceforthe16 reminds us of the financial failures of the WUSA
MaloneGod (my favorite at the time) says the women’s game is of low quality, not a spectator sport, and the players just aren’t competitive enough. But then turns around and says they’ve only ever watched a FA Cup final. This person is an authority on the subject for sure.
So at this point I left the computer. Went and ran some errands and had a work meeting (dear companies everywhere: Instant Message & Go To Meeting is where it’s at). I then returned to the BBC Smith debate only to find some new and quite disturbing comments:
Alfdawg says the women’s game is akin to watching “an under 13’s boys match” and “monkey tennis”
BigBallsBarry says the women’s game isn’t a serious sport like tennis or “athletics” (uhhh, okaaay)
Justiceforthe16 says women won’t be competitive in the sport until they play with men and women are sexist because they won’t play with men
You know, and this whole time, I thought the insults against MLS were bad. Clearly I’m in a whole ‘nother ballpark now.
(Not to focus completely on the bad. Big ups to LaticsValencia, Mancs_Logic, coolinterstar, AmericanSportFan, hard_to_beat, etc etc etc for sticking up for Smith’s decision. Especially after reading that the Football Association planned to offer their players only £16,000 a year.
