Looking for something to do on Monday? Register for the draft!
By: Melissa | October 1st, 2008The deadline to be added to the “prospective player email list” is this Friday and the application form is located here. It looks to be a pretty simple procedure and you only really have to answer two questions: 1) where you played and 2) what awesome shit you did while you were playing there. Simple enough. Whalla! Welcome to the WPS draft.
And this Monday’s draft will include many of the other USWNT players, some W-League players, some WPSL players, and other domestic players who’ve exhausted their NCAA eligibility and who (I’m assuming) filled out the above mentioned application. There will be International Players too and I’m guessing the ones participating in this draft are not under any contracts and are looking to sign with whichever WPS team may pick them (since they presumably filled out the above mentioned application). Wow, ok – this could potentially be a pretty big list of players, so how many rounds have we got? Four. It’s a draft for twenty-eight players total. Here’s how it goes:
Round One
1. Washington Freedom
2. Bay Area
3. Washington Freedom (via trade with St. Louis on Sept. 24)
4. Boston Breakers
5. Los Angeles
6. Chicago Red Stars
7. Sky Blue FC
Round Two
8. Sky Blue FC
9. Chicago Red Stars
10. Los Angeles
11. Boston Breakers
12. Los Angeles (via trade with St. Louis on Sept. 24)
13. Bay Area
14. St. Louis (via trade with the Washington Freedom on Sept. 24)
Round Three
15. St. Louis (via trade with the Washington Freedom on Sept. 24)
16. Bay Area
17. Washington Freedom (via trade with St. Louis on Sept. 24)
18. Boston Breakers
19. Los Angeles
20. Chicago Red Stars
21. Sky Blue FC
Round Four
22. Sky Blue FC
23. Chicago Red Stars
24. St. Louis (via trade with Los Angeles on Sept. 24)
25. Boston Breakers
26. St. Louis
27. Bay Area
28. Washington Freedom
Hmmm, what did St Louis get in return for trading away their first round draft pick to the Freedom? Will we ever know? And they also traded their second round pick to Los Angeles. Then it looks like maybe they freaked out a bit and traded with the Freedom again to get back into round two. Either St Louis have no idea what they are doing or they are the smartest team on the planet and this is all part of a much larger and more intricate plan. You guys are welcome to speculate in the comments. (Jim sheds more light on the St Louis trades in the comments here)
And those of us not in attendance can follow along 2pm ET / 11am PT via the WPS twitter page. Afterwards, Nick Webster, Steve Cohen, and a special unnamed guest will discuss it all on Fox Football Fone-In (8pm ET / 5pm PT). Who do you think the special guest will be? I hope it’s Sarah Palin and during the show she shoots a moose… or Dick Cheney.

The trade between St. Louis and Washington before the international draft included these picks in the general draft Monday. St. Louis moved up to No. 4 in the international draft and received picks 14 and 15 in Monday’s draft from Washington for pick No. 6 in the international draft and picks 3 and 17 on Monday. The trade with LA included picks from both drafts as well.

Aha! The missing links. Thanks. I hope the trades for better picks in the International Draft work out for St Louis and they sign their potential players. Otherwise… whoops.
