Gettin down to biznazz
By: Melissa | July 17th, 2009
Special halftime performance by the other Swedish powerhouse, Ace of Base (I wish)
And by biznazz, I mean the All Star Game. Didn’t think little ‘ol WPS would get out of this tried and true American sports tradition, did ya? Nope. The All Stars are up against Umea IK (I was holding out for FC Indiana but I guess there’s always next year). Voting starts now. Vote and vote often (until July 31st when voting ends). 25% of your votes will make up this team with another 25% coming from media, 25% from the players, and 25% from the coaches (except 7 players will be selected by the All Star team coach and WPS Commish). Did we leave anyone out? Oh wait — the players get to pick the All Star coach! Everybody wins in this league! So myself, the media, the players, and the coaches get equal chances to pick the Starting eleven. I think if I do the math right, that means I get 2.75 players. Okay. Here goes:
* Nicole Barnhart – I’ve seen pictures of her. She looks like she would cut me.
* Frida Östberg – I’ve seen this woman play. I KNOW she would cut me.
* Kelly Smith (she’s my .75 pick only cause I’m sure the Commish will pick her anyway) – when England National Team coach Hope Powell benched her this week and England lost 2-0 to Iceland, Smith twittered: “I’m sure Hope learned alot from this regarding selection.” Oh good lord. Smith would cut me then twitter about it.
And speaking of everybody winning, you also get to vote for your favorite WPS team and your next favorite WPS team. Unforch, you don’t get to keep going down the line and pick every WPS team so not everyone wins at everything. But with so few WPS teams right now, someone will certainly win something during this event. The game is August 30th at 5:30pm Eastern and will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel.
