Abby Wambach not shortlisted by FIFA, is shortlisted by China
By: Melissa | October 31st, 2008Apparently, during the Olympics, Chinese officials produced a list of athletes who could potentially “stage some sort of demonstration”. Wambach was on that list… despite not participating in the games. In fact, according to the Sports Illustrated article, the list didn’t seem to be very well thought out:
The athletes included softball players Jennie Finch, Jessica Mendoza, Natasha Watley, Amanda Freed, and softball assistant coach Karen Johns; soccer player Abby Wambach; cyclist Jonathan Page; paralympic basketball player Jen Howitt; paralympic wheelchair racer Cheri Blauwet; and golfer Laura Goodwin.
Wambach was injured and did not compete in the Olympics. Goodwin did not compete because golf is not an Olympic sport. Page was not selected for USA Cycling’s Beijing-bound team. He specializes in cyclocross, a combination of road and off-road racing that is not part of the Olympic program.
Whoops. Ah well, if I was Abby, I’d be proud I made this cut. Speaking of Wambach and the Washington Freedom, the Maryland SoccerPlex, home of the W-League Washington Freedom, will be expanding to over 5,000 seats in anticipation for its WPS side. The project is being paid for by the Freedom owners (nice) and was unanimously supported by the county (double nice) in what looks to be sweet upgrade to the already well-established relationship between the facility and the club. Great decision on the Freedom’s part to give their home a little boost – and despite a few double-headers planned next season with DC United, it looks like the Maryland SoccerPlex will remain the Freedom’s base for games and practices.
