On Playoffs and Head Coaches

I’m starting this post out not entirely WPS related but did ya see last night’s Classico? Great game. Nice to see Guzan finally coming back into form – and not just because I named my car after him. But on a slightly relevant note, the Classico started a little late because a WNBA game ran a bit long. So I watched the final minutes of LA v Sacramento. Now, I know very little about the WNBA but my first gut reaction during those minutes was that the Sacramento head coach is straight up FIERCE. So a big shout out to Jenny Boucek. I have no idea how many women are head coaches in the WNBA but I hope more than one. I would also like to add that it was pretty dern cool the announcers were women and women who obviously knew the game and who obviously were NOT IMPRESSED when asked if they would stick around to watch the Classico because Beckham was playing. Was that Rob Stone who cut in and asked the announcers that stupid question? I can’t remember now but whoever you are, what a way to belittle MLS.

Moving on… it’s playoffs berth time in the W-League. Most notably, the Pali Blues are the Western Conference champions and currently hold an impeccable 11-0 record. On the somewhat opposite side of the fence, Jersey Sky Blue were struggling last week to qualify but seem to be slowly crawling their way back into the running. It looks like they’re in fourth place and their Conference has three playoff spots. Damn. Good luck to them. Already qualified so far are: The Atlanta Silverbacks, The Charlotte Lady Eagles, and Pali Blues. USL has a handy playoffs chart available here.

Oh and a quick shout out to Sky Blue’s Denise Reddy, who was the only female coach selected to participate in September’s W-League Combine. Yeah, these things are important to me. Can you tell?
