Olympic Downtime Musings

By: Melissa | August 6th, 2008

If you’ve been reading the stuff I write for The Offside & World Cup Blog for a while, you probably already figured out I’m a bit of a geek. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that I cannot access the video at the NBC Olympics site because I don’t run Windows or OS X. But on the bright side, it looks like I got an invite to tonight’s LinuxWorld VIP party. Apparently Linus Torvalds doesn’t attend these things anymore which is sad and I’ve lost all ability to network and schmooze so I doubt I’m coming out of this with an awesome new job. At least I hope there’s free booze and food.

In the world of “things that confuse me,” Laura Del Rio is expected to sign with FC Indiana for the 2009 season. So does this mean she won’t try to land a spot on a WPS team? FC Indiana still play in the W-League which allows clubs to stay amateur or go professional (FC Indiana chose the latter) and the owners of FC Indiana are part owners of the Red Stars, YET WPS officials have made it clear clubs will not get player preferences. So we should not expect to see such a relationship between the Red Stars and their affiliates (I think it was only last year that MLS even allowed clubs to sign players from their youth and amateur squads). Is Del Rio, and Indiana’s other major signing, Monica Ocampo, expecting not to make the cut because each WPS team is only allowed two international players? Or will there be another route to join a roster besides the announced drafts and combines?

And one last bit of news. It appears there may actually be a p2p feed of a Women’s FA Cup game between Everton FC and Arsenal tomorrow. I’ve got it listed beginning at 11:45am (I’m on the Pacific Coast) and the link to the feeds is here (hopefully some urls will pop up sometime tomorrow morning). I think this is a replay? According to their website, the new season doesn’t start until September.

no, the Womens FA Cup was won by Arsenal this May. This is the community shield match and it is live. Arsenal has a great squad and you won’t want to miss the match.

it’s no problem. You’ve got a great blog and I’m just glad you picked up on the match. Both clubs have superb development programs and hopefully through your blog many people will tune into it. Thanks -
