Bag O’ Crap

By: Melissa | November 21st, 2008

Yesterday was the day for Woot to announce their somewhat regular and extremely popular giveaway bonanza, so in honor of not winning my very own, I instead bring you the WPS random newsbits of crap.

* Marta Marta Marta. She apparently said in an interview that she has not played her last match for Umea following their 6-0 win over Arsenal. She was quoted as saying, “I’m planning to play for at least eight more years.” I dunno – I kind of get the sense she really meant I’m gonna play soccer for at least eight more years. So perhaps she’s not really declaring an allegiance to Sweden or the USA here. But according to the link, Umea’s general manager Britta Akerlund says the club is still seven figures off from LA Sol’s offer. ORLY?

* The economy continues to slide and concerns continue to rise over the stability of WPS in this climate. It seems the St Louis draft pick Daniela has received a new offer from her old club, Linkoping, who hope to be able to match or beat whatever offer she received from the WPS side. Ruh row.

* Unsurprisingly, heaps of WPS players are nominated for US Soccer’s Athlete of the Year award. You can head on over to their site and vote. My favorite part of that link is the bit where each nominee gets a little description of their position except Hope Solo. Homegirl TRANSCENDS.

* Christmas is right around the corner and despite the fact that most people are broke or unemployed or both, Sky Blue FC and the Boston Breakers both have holiday gift offers at their site. My favorite is the Boston Breakers pajamas. They look really comfortable and warm.

Hi, interesting blog! I’m just curious, what’s the latest rumour about the WPS league in the US? As you perhaps know there is a rumour in Sweden that the financial crisis has led to problems for the WPS, for example no non-american player has signed up so far. Regarding Marta, it seems as if her agent is trying to persuade one of her sponsors to fix the money so that she can stay in Umea.

    Best regards from Linkoping

I remember reading from a news source in Australia (and I’ve got to run out the door so no time to look it up right now) that at least two WPS International Draft picks did sign (I think one was Sarah Walsh – again, I need to go verify this to be sure, my memory gets kinda fuzzy). It’s hard to know because we don’t get much news over here and the WPS teams themselves are very very quiet to confirm whether their draft picks actually signed or if they are still in negotiations.
