Better late than never? Your review + preview
By: Melissa | April 9th, 2009To put it mildly, my entire April is out of whack. I will be slippin a bit. Moving on. There were some games last weekend and there are some games coming up this weekend and HOLEY CRAP did ya watch the Boston/Bay Area one on Sunday? Cause that was some straight Barcelona sh*it going down in the You Ess of Haaaay. For the first time in a couple years, there is finally a good soccer team in Northern California. Seriously catch a replay of that game . Great fun to watch. Okely dokely then…
Chicago Red Stars 1, Saint Louis Athletica 0 Lindsay Tarpley scored the first goal ever for Chicago and she also wins the photoshop awards with her twitter pic. Saint Louis massively outshot Chicago during both halves but it was a 78th minute slip-up that gave the Red Stars the lead. After the game, Hope Solo commented in typical Hope Solo fashion: “We’ll rebound from this, it won’t be hard.” Also, quite a few folks from the Red Stars supporters group, Local 134, were there to cheer on their team. Nice!
Los Angeles Sol 2, Sky Blue FC 0 A few days ago, Diplo twittered: “About to step into walgreens with my girl and get this pantyhose” which I think pretty much sums up this game. The visitors stepped right in and got it done. Both goals were scored by Marta in the first half, both goals were scored within 2 minutes, and both goals were scored after Christie Rampone strained her hamstring and left the game.
FC Gold Pride 2, Boston Breakers 1 First I gotta say, hats off to our very own David for manning the FCGP twitter account and doing a great job updating that thing! Not only did he provide updates from the pitch, he also included a few coach comments from the bench as well as pictures of the fans inside the staduim. And updates from the autographs session afterwards! That’s what I like to call a complete package. As for the game – excellent. My favorite moment was when a very very frustrated Kelly Smith pushed Carrie Dew. Dew’s response? Pointing her finger at Smith with an extremely obvious “Oh No You Didn’t!” pose. Lucky for Smith, her relief came quickly enough after the incident when she scored a goal to equalize the game (after a booooootiful first goal in the first half from Eriko Arakawa). And Tiffany “not dead yet” Milbrett sealed the win for the Cougars in the second half. Also, lookout for future WPS superstar, Tiffany Weimer.
Washington Freedom 2, University of Virginia 0 Okay, not officially a WPS game but so what? I was still gettting updates while it was happening so as far as I’m concerned, it counts. Goals from Abby Wambach and Jayme Leigh Cargnoni. So good news after last Sunday’s absmal performance against the La Sol. Except coach Jim Gabarra commented after the game: “I’d still like more time.” Ouch.
Whew! Okay now. On to the previews…
Saint Louis Athletica at the Boston Breakers April 11, 7pm ET. Here’s how I see it. This past weekend, both teams had impressive scoring opportunities and they also has a sh*tload of scoring opportunities…that…were…shut…down. So I’m gonna give this one to the number one – Hope Solo. She’ll be the tipping point that gives Saint Louis their first win. But those pink goalkeeper uniforms totally lose no matter what.
Chicago Red Stars at the Washington Freedom April 11, 6pm ET. And this one will be televised! Magic 8 ball and captain obvious says Chicago takes this one. Washington’s top scoring threats are still not at 100% and the team just isn’t there yet cohesively. On the other hand, the Red Stars are merely hammering out issues with their finishing. I’m pretty excited to watch what will happen.
FC Gold Pride at Sky Blue FC April 11, 7:45pm ET. Despite getting hammered by Marta within two minutes, Sky Blue had a few key scoring opportunities during their last game. Key scoring opportunities that were shut down by Katrina Leblanc. And this time they’re up against Rachel Buehler. Not a good start for the New Jersey team.
(Annnnnd my dyslexia strikes again! Clearly because Nicole Barnhart & Rachel Buehler both have last names starting with B and play on the same team, they are the same person.)

Here are Heather Mitt’s comments taken off her blog…after losing to the FC Gold Pride. What a poor sport…does not give the Pride any credit whatsoever. By the way, anyone who saw the game would agree that the Pride totally outplayed them in this game.
“So the first game of the season didn’t go as planned. I am not going to make too many excuses but I think I can speak for everyone, except Kelly Smith, by saying we played awful. We weren’t organized, didn’t win our first and second balls and missed easy chances on goal. The one positive is that we played that bad and we still should have won. Lets hope that we all decide to show up this weekend for our first home game at Harvard Stadium. Carli Lloyd (Chicago Red Stars) told me after their win last weekend that they were lucky to win that game. We know what to expect and know we all need to elevate our game. Today’s practice was inspiring. Look forward to Saturday and hope to see you there….-Heather”
