Thank twitter: Kelly Smith signs with Boston
By: Melissa | February 8th, 2009Despite doing a pretty bang-up job putting together what’s looking to be the top (women’s) league in the world from scratch, it does not take a genius to know that the interest is more or less in the niche phase so the publicity aspect isn’t quite on par with say, the NBA or MLB. Ok, not even MLS can boast that. So it’s completely fitting that I received news that Kelly Smith finally signed with the Boston Breakers through the amazing viral phenomenon known as re-tweeting other people’s twitters. So thank twitter for the news and the link to the article from the BBC.
And the best part of the above article is Kelly spelling out all the reasons why she left Arsenal. So let’s review:
I couldn’t earn anywhere near to what I’ll be getting in the WPS if I stayed in this country. But it’s not just about money. It’s about playing with and against the best players in the world, training every day and everything else that goes with being a professional footballer.
A four-year contract adds longevity to my career
I love playing for England and if that clause [the clause allowing players to be released from their clubs for National Team duties] had not been in my contract I wouldn’t have signed it.
So there you have it. Congrats to Kelly. And BBC online readers have already sparked a little debate over the signing including the inevitable comparisons to David Beckham’s failed attempt to play for the La Galaxy. But my favorite comment so far is from MaloneGod. Go check out what that person has to say on the topic.

I should probably remember but maybe someone can remind me – how many non-North American players were in WUSA? Seems like there are many more signed in WPS.

From the WUSA wikipedia page:
Each roster primarily consisted of players from the United States, although up to four international players were allowed on each team’s roster.
I can’t remember off the top of my head the max international players allowed for each WPS team (I’m thinking 5?). I think it seems like a lot because it’s the only signing news we’re getting right now.

Teams can negotiate with 6 international players but can only sign 5. It’s still designed to be a US-oriented league, but great to see that WPS is becoming a world All-Star league. Still need the Germans though.
Sorry, can’t do the cheap wow gold. I’m a Sham-Wow!! kind of person.

Melissa, way to hit the ground running with WPS coverage! FYI, each WPS team can roster 5 internationals. If you’re interested, I made a list of the current (signed) internationals on my Big Soccer blog — http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/blog.php?b=3621

I’m really holding out for Snuggie to become the official sponsor of WPS The Offside.
And as the readers probably already know, I’m terrible with names and numbers and generally rely on internet research or somebody else to correct my mistakes. I’m so used to it, I don’t even care when I’m wrong. But yeah, Amanda’s BigSoccer post has a nice list of the signings so far. Hopefully we can add in domestic players soon.

Do you know that the wow gold? The players often forget to eat meal when they play the online games. In the game many players need the World of Warcraft Gold to up their levels.
