I apologize + W-League
By: Melissa | May 13th, 2008I had every intention of writing a W-League preview last Thursday, but my friend came over with a bottle of wine instead. And I promise I will update more often. I really am treating this blog as a labor of love so neglect just makes me feel guilty.
To start off, it’s time for me to confess that I know very little about women’s soccer in this country. Me writing The WPS Offside is both and exercise in personal education as well as an attempt to foster some exposure and promotion for the new league. So to those of you in the know, please be patient if I start from the beginning with a lot of this stuff. And maybe possibly, there are more readers than just myself who won’t mind skimming the basics too.
The W-League is the current top-tier women’s soccer league in the US and I believe it falls under the giant USL umbrella – and, oddly enough, the USL wikipedia page says their leagues are structured to support promotion and relegation. I can’t recall if USL is actually doing it though. Anyways, the W-League is a mixture of amateurs and professionals. Each team can have 26 players with 7 international slots and three players on each team must be under the age of 19. Currently, the league has only one division, and with WPS around the corner, I can’t imagine a split happening anytime soon. But there sure are a ton of teams. And the Eastern Conference mostly kicked into gear this weekend, with one lone game in the West. Key winners included 2007 W-League champions The Washington Freedom, former Eastern Conference champions The New England Mutiny, and 2008 expansion team, Pali Blues. I’ll keep tabs of the season and write updates from time to time. If anyone has a team they are supporting, go ahead and rep them in the comments.
I’ll put up a blogroll this week – or rather, the hooptie version of a blogroll this particular wordpress will only allow.

Good reason not to post. I’ll have to use that one myself!

So I’m in the Windy City this week where Peter Wilt and Marcia McDermott just announced Emma Hayes as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach for Chicago WPS! My opinion - it’s nice to see a woman in the hot seat. She’ll be up against some heavy hitters, and I totally believe she’s perfect for the job.

I’m personally excited to see a woman head coach in this league and also one with such amazing credentials. I loved your interview with her on your blog btw.
It’s clear the Chicago team is doing everything right to build a strong team from scratch. I’d say at this point, they will be our first year champions.
