Time to give the ladies some love
By: Melissa | May 2nd, 2008April is over so I’d like to take a moment to point out something very important that everyone should be aware of. The Women’s Professional Soccer league will begin play less than year from now. Yup, let the hype machine begin. What hype machine you ask? Honestly, I have no idea but perhaps I can help create a teensy little buzz by introducing the WPS blog on The Offside.
It’s not entirely clear to me what I intend to do with this blog for the remaining less-than-a-year, but I think to begin, I’ll try to cover whatever news trickles out of the WPS offices (conveniently located down the street from a different office I work at) as well as report on women’s soccer at the upcoming Olympics - with an eye towards potential player signings. I also plan to post information on a particular pet peeve of mine: where in the crap fans can watch the games either streaming or on television. In the meantime we’ve got the potential for new teams in new cities as well as player drafts and international signings. All pretty exciting stuff. So let’s begin…
WPS takes a more grassroots approach than its predecessor, the WUSA, since the fan base is small and there are no real superstars to propel the league. They are also partnering with MLS to share facilities and staff. But unlike MLS, WPS is using the traditional franchise system so each club owns their players. The roster will feature mainly US citizens or green card holders as there are only five international slots allowed per team. Teams will consist of between twenty and twenty-four players and there will be a draft – probably more than one, but the details are not finalized. Teams currently exist in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, St. Louis, and Washington DC. There is potential for expansion, even before April, as the league is still looking to grow. Got between two and three million dollars lying around? Whalla! You can own your very own sports team.
Will I be stalking the WPS offices and picking through their trash? Uhh, no. But perhaps, when I think up a few intelligent questions, I can land an interview or two. I do think it will be fun to document the development of this league and my hope is, I can develop this blog to look more like the MLS or Mexico The Offside pages, with individual bloggers covering each team. So that means I will always be on the lookout for anyone who wants to help write this thing!
Ok, so when I’m not here, I’m usually loitering over at the MLS page and writing the San Jose blog. I also spend a lot of time geeking out over open source technology (this blog is written entirely using Linux) and working on a robotic art project. I guess I have a lot of interests so sometimes I may stray a bit from talking soccer. Be patient, I’m a little frazzled but I’ll get back on point eventually. Please check back here often and write lots of comments.

Awesome to see coverage of the WPS! I myself am just starting to get into women’s soccer as I try to follow the Lyon ladies team (who have been home to some WNT members in the past). I always find it interesting that women’s soccer has so many more followers in the US as opposed to elsewhere, despite soccer being the number one sport in those countries.
Here’s to seeing the WPS prosper. I hope it does better than WUSA.

I’m jumping on the L.A. team’s bandwagon from the start, even if Hope Solo is on it.

i’m jumping on the bandwagon of whatever team hope solo is on…just cause she tells it like it is.

Elle, I agree the decision not to play Hope Solo vs. Brazil was incomprehensibly stupid. I don’t even mind her telling the media that the move was stupid. But to talk about how she could have made those saves … really? How do you know? Because you let a pretty silly goal in against North Korea, and I don’t remember Briana telling the press, “I could have made that save.”
So was Hope screwed over? Yes. Did Greg Ryan deserve criticism? Yep. Should Hope have thrown Bri under the bus with him? No.Posted from

I feel the Solo “International Incident” is so much more complicated that someone ratting out their teammate. I always refer to an excellent piece from Andrea Canales when discussing it. Dunno if now is the time to bring the whole issue back up again. Perhaps down the line, it will re-surface.

You know what I like about girls on the US National Team? As I get older, they stay the same age…all right all right all right!

Any idea how WPS will interact with the USL W-League?

Alright boys, let’s get it all out of our systems now (and I’m keeping my mouth shut on commenting on the Men’s National Team’s “80’s Babies”).
Lucas: That is a really good question. I believe there may be a separate draft just for W-League and/or WPSL players (as opposed to college players). But anymore details I think just aren’t hashed out yet. Whether we see a system like MLS/USL is now, I dunno but its probably likely. I dunno if WPSL will look more like how PDL is now of if there will be a different structure.

tar heel: This is great news! I am crossing my fingers we get a San Francisco Bay team before April (not in San Jose, that’s soo 2000). The DC team is yours. I was thinking of doing little historical blurbs on each team. You wanna do DC? I should just email you.

Since we’re starting a league from scratch … I know it’s not going to happen, but I have to ask … promotion/relegation system? Please?

PS - “The New Jersey / New York Sky Blue” is officially the worst name ever for anything … EVER. Credit is due to the league for upping the ante on the old NY/NJ Metrostars, the previous crappy-name champions of American soccer.

Good question to ask a head muckity muck at the WPS offices. But we all know this is highly doubtful. I think only the US and Australia don’t do it? Perhaps the new league can think about integrating a once every few years aggregate model like in the FMF.

Nope - the Cyberrays from the old WUSA win for worst team name ever ever ever. Even their logo was awful.

I stand corrected. Their logo looks like a bad Transformers spinoff, and the massive S at the end is worse than awful.
